Library cuts are an attack on communities: Durkan

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said that the first act of the new Department of Communities cannot be an attack on libraries which, he said, were at the heart of so many local areas.

Mr Durkan was speaking after a public consultation was launched on slashing opening hours for libraries across the North, including reducing the operating hours of the Central Library in Derry’s Foyle Street from 54 to 49..

He said: “In areas across the North, and particularly in Derry, libraries are a key asset contributing to the life and spirit of our communities. They form an integral part of the cultural and educational landscape, particularly for children and those living in less affluent areas.

“There are families across this city who rely on their local library for computer access for their children to complete homework or coursework assignments. It’s more than just a storehouse for books. This is a critical resource for those in our city who have already suffered most as a result of cuts.

“The plans are now out for public consultation and I would encourage everyone interested in defending our community resources to respond as soon as possible.”
