Police in Derry seized bottles of, vodka, beer and cider from young people in St Columb's Park last night. They have also revealed that the new CCTV system is up and running in the park.
Saturday night's seizure was the second seizure in as many nights, and followed resident's complaints after a massive outdoor drinking session, involving up to 400 young people at the park a fortnight ago.
A spokesperson for the PSNI Waterside Neighbourhood Patrol Team said: "We’re there because the community have asked us to be there. Please remember the park is a space for everyone.
"When I’m in the park and seizing drink, I always hear the phrase, Sure I’m dead on,' but large groups of young people drinking IS intimidating to other park users.
"So come and enjoy the park responsibly but don’t bring alcohol. We’ll just be seizing it and it breaks my heart to pour all that booze down the drain. Worst of all, I’ll get to watch me doing that again and again and again on the great new CCTV in the park.
"To those who have had drink taken off them already, you’ll thank us when you wake up tomorrow without that hangover."
