A group of Derry school children have raised more than £14,000 for the Foyle Hospice by showing off their new dancing skills.

Fifty-six boys and girls from 14 local primary schools took part in the Strictly Kool Kids event at the Everglades Hotel.

The primary six or seven pupils were matched up with a partner and spent the last three months training for their big performances.

They were taught five dances; the Cha Cha Cha, Swing Jive, The Quickstep, The Pride of Erin and The Honkey Tonk Twist.

There were huge crowds on each of the four nights that they performed at the Everglades.

Michelle McGinn, Business and Schools Fundraiser for the Foyle Hospice, said all who took part should be proud that their efforts raised more than £14,000 for the local hospice.

“The children were a joy to work with and we have had much fun and laughter over the weeks,” she said.

“It really has been great to see the children connect and build friendships with one another as well as learning the art of ballroom dancing.”

Michille said she hoped the young people would ‘keep on dancing’.

“This is the third time we have run this event and it has helped to promote dance & healthy wellbeing amongst 10-11 year olds whilst at the same time raising awareness of the work of Foyle Hospice amongst this age group.

“Through this event we have also incorporated cross community relations between local primary school children which has been fantastic.

“I want to say a big thank you to each of the 56 children who took part. It has been a great pleasure to get to know them all individually over the last 14 weeks.

“The children’s dedication to the training sessions has been brilliant. Their behaviour and conduct has been amazing, their families and schools should be very proud of them.

“The monies they have raised for Foyle hospice will enable us to provide care to our patients. Thank you kindly for all your hard work obtaining sponsorship.”
