The police in Derry have revealed that a car-jack was thrown at them from a stolen Ford Focus in the Galliagh area last night, shortly before the vehicle was found burnt out on a bonfire.
Around 10.105pm last night, Tuesday 15 May, police used sirens and lights to indicate to the driver of a grey Ford Focus car travelling on the Glengalliagh Road in Derry that it was required to stop.
Sergeant Gary Breen said: “A vehicle jack was thrown from the moving car’s rear right passenger window toward police. Thankfully, it did not hit our patrol car and no-one was injured by it.
“The vehicle did not stop for police and was subsequently abandoned on The Green in Galliagh around 10.20pm. Three to four males set fire to it before pushing it into a bonfire that was already alight. They joined a group of other young people and moved off before police could speak to them.
“The fire was extinguished by the NI Fire and Rescue Service. Later in the night, at around 11.50pm, the NIFRS made us aware of pallets that had been set on fire in the Rossnagalliagh area of the city.
“We would be keen to speak to the young people travelling in the Ford Focus last night as they may have information useful to our investigation. I am also appealing to anyone who has information about anti-social behaviour in the city to get in touch with police on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1367 of 15/5/18.
“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
