The incident occurred after a man in a white van dumped dozens of tyres close to Linear Park, which children then used to make a bonfire.
The anti-social behaviour then began shortly after 9pm last night.
Sergeant Adrian Brogan said: “Police attended and found that between 15 and 20 young people had gathered and had a number of tyres and pallets at two sites in a field close to Galliagh Park .
“The pallets, tyres and a motorbike were subsequently set on fire and missiles were thrown. Police monitored the situation during the evening.”
