Local councillors have been urged to make a donation to charity every time they take biscuits during a meeting.

The move comes after the Derry News revealed earlier this week that a number of councillors on Derry and Strabane council said they were 'dissatisfied' with the catering, heating and sound provided during meetings at the Guildhall.

It also emerged earlier this year that concerns had been raised that the biscuit provision during meetings in Strabane was better than that of Derry.

However, a donation box will now be placed beside the biscuit tray at council meetings after a proposal earlier today.

Speaking at this afternoon's meeting of the council's Health and Community Committee, the SDLP's Shauna Cusack referred to 'Biscuitgate' adding that there had been a 'lot of talk on social media' in relation to this.

She added that to 'counteract this', and in the interests of health promotion, that council 'should make some kind of gesture'.

Cllr Cusack proposed that a donation box is now placed next to the biscuits at meetings, and councillors make a donation to the Mayor's chosen charity, which is Aware, every time they take a biscuit.

The proposal was then passed, with the independent councillor Paul Gallagher commenting: "I never touch them - all you have to do is look at me."
