A Derry councillor has issued a warning after a number of others were broken into in the Waterside area of the city last night.
The Waterside SDLP councillor Tina Gardiner said: "There was a spate of burglaries last night along the Limavady Road."
"In light of the recent increase in burglaries in the area I would be urging people to be vigilant and also to look out for their neighbours and friends particularly older people living near them.
"The theft of property goes much further than the financial loss to people.
"The invasion of a person's home has a traumatic impact on peoples sense of security and having experienced it personally I imagine the impact must be much worse if you live alone.
"The people carrying out these crimes are in the minority and people looking out for each other and checking on their neighbours will go someway to combating the negative effects of a persons home being broken into."
She added: If anyone in the area is feeling vulnerable and think they would benefit from a home safety check then I would encourage them to contact me or any of the SDLP representatives and we will help organise this."
