A Derry man accused inflicting ‘extensive head injuries’ on a male, which left him ‘unrecognisable’ to those who know him, has been refused bail.
James Lee Rush, 23, of Bridge Street, is charged with grievous bodily harm to a male and robbing the same individual of £700 on February 18 of this year.
The defendant appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court via video link for a bail application on May 24.
The address put forward was that of his sister in England.
The court heard that the alleged victim was found in an alleyway by members of the public and discovered to have ‘extensive injuries to his head’.
His eyes were swollen and he was ‘unrecognisable’ to those who knew him.
The victim was transferred to hospital where he was diagnosed with ‘multiple facial fractures’.
Commenting, District Judge Barney McElholm said: “It sounds to me like a very, very serious offence that could attract a lengthy custodial sentence, if he’s found guilty.”
Bail was refused and the case adjourned to a court sitting on June 14.
