Donegal constituency expected to vote No by narrow majority in abortion referendum

Donegal looks set to record a narrow No vote in the abortion referendum - that's the view of the No camp at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny where the sorting of votes should be concluded by early afternoon.

Less than 20% of the boxes remain to be opened and tally figures show that that 52% have voted No in Donegal while 48% voted Yes.

The figure has been fairly consistent throughout the morning.

Inishowen has seen a No majority but in Letterkenny - the biggest urban centre - there was a Yes majority.

The tally figures give a good indication regarding how the county has voted.

However, the official result will not be known until later this afternoon.

According to the tally figures, one polling station in Whitecastle (Inishowen) was 70% No.

By contrast, one Letterkenny polling booth (at Ballyraine National School) had a 79% Yes vote.

Overall, Buncrana has a majority No vote.

Dooish National School outside Ballybofey voted 54%, Yes 46% No, according to the tally figures.

In Donegal Town, three of the polling stations had a Yes majoirty while two had a No majority.

Dunkineely had a slender Yes majority.

Other selected tally figures were: Carrigart (Yes 55%), Downings (Yes 55%), Rathmullan (Yes, 54%), Kerrykeel (62% No),  Meenacross (54% No), and Portsalon (60% No).

The tally figures are based on observations made during the sorting of votes.

After all the 246 boxes have been opened, the official counting of votes will then begin.

A result is expected later this afternoon.

Elsewhere, the  vast majority of constituencies are set to record a large Yes majority, with the figure being over 70% in several constituencies.

Part of south Donegal is in a constituency that includes Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan. Tally figures there suggest that there will be a Yes majority.
