The killing of a 24-year-old man in Derry last night has shocked the entire city, SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said.

Police have arrested a 16-year-old youth and launched a murder investigation following what they have described as an “altercation” in Milldale Crescent (pictured) in the Currynierin area of the Waterside.

The man was rushed to the nearby Altnagelvin Hospital where he later died.

It is understood he sustained a stab wound.

Another 24-year-old man, believed to be the victim’s twin brother, sustained head injuries in the incident which occurred shortly before 10.30pm.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Mr Durkan said the incident had shocked the entire city.

He added: “This morning a family is coming to terms with the death of a son in the most horrific of circumstances.

“The loss of a young man in any circumstances is absolutely tragic but to have had someone with their whole life in front of them murdered like this will be particularly devastating for his family and his community.

“My thoughts and prayers, and those of my party, are with the young man’s family and friends at this difficult time. I have no doubt that the community here will rally around them and provide every support that they need.

“I would urge anyone with any information about this crime or who may have heard a disturbance in the Milldale Crescent area last night to come forward to the police as soon as possible.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Christopher Jackson also said the killing had shocked the community.

He added: “There is shock in the community on hearing this news. My thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family at this time and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to the PSNI.”

The PSNI officer leading the investigation as appealed for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey said:: “I would ask anyone in the community who knows anything about the circumstances leading up to this incident, or saw or heard an altercation in the Milldale Crescent area, to contact police and give us this information.
