A man charged with what a judge at Derry Magistrate's Court described as 'an extremely violent domestic assault' has been refused bail.

David Campbell (20) of no fixed abode faces four charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, common assault and criminal damage all involving the same alleged injured party on May 30 this year.

A police officer opposed bail and said that the woman had 'been kicked in the face and head while defenceless on the ground.'

He described it as 'quite a nasty assault' and opposed bail due to the unsuitability of the bail address and fear of further offences.

As for the address he said it was about a mile from family members of the alleged injured party where she visited on a regular basis and said police had 'concerns' about that.

He added that the defendant had a history of bail breaches.

District Judge Barney McElholm said he did not think Campbell was a suitable candidate for bail and refused it.

Campbell will appear again on July 5.
