The funeral has taken place this afternoon of Derry murder victim Gerard Quinn.
Speaking during Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Church, Ardmore, celebrant Fr Michael Canny told mourners the 24-year-old was a “loving father whose life was cruelly cut short by an evil and brutal act.”
Players from Ardmore GAA Club and Currynierin FC accompanied Mr Quinn's coffin (pictured) as it was taken to the church and for burial afterwards in the adjouning cemetery.
Mr Quinn, a father-of-one, died in Altnagelvin Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning last, six hours after being stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle at a house party at Milldale Crescent in the Currynierin area of Derry.
A 16-year-old boy, from the Top of the Hill area of the city, is currently in custody after appearing in court during the week charged with his murder.
The youth is also accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Mr Quinn’s twin brother, who was injured in the incident.
Mr Quinn’s body was returned to his home in Currynierin yesterday afternoon following the conclusion of post mortem examinations in Belfast.
