A group of Derry school girls are to stage an “out of this world” exhibition.
The special display of Thornhill College pupils’ space-related activities will take place in the Central Library on Foyle Street in the city from Monday, June 13, until Saturday, June 18.
The exhibition will showcase work from the GCSE Astronomy and Level 2 Space Science Technology courses currently being studied by the pupils.
It will include a survey of street lighting in the local area with some astronomical images of objects created by the pupils using their own remotely-operated telescopes.
The exhibition is managed by Kevin Abbott of Thornhill College and will be opened by Andy McMurray, the Head of Learning at the National Space Academy in Leicester.
The opening will take place on Monday, June 13, at 5pm and will be followed by a public lecture from 6pm – 7.15pm entitled “Space Science at Thornhill College and on the International Space Station”.
The lecture will include anoverview of the space science currently taking place at Thornhill College.
It will discuss the size and scale of objects in space and get some idea of where the International Space Station is located.
The discussion will also look at the science British astronaut Tim Peake (pictured) is doing on the space station.
The exhibition and opening lecture are free of charge and are open to members of the public.
