Why Martin McGuinness will be supporting Northern Ireland in this year's European Championships

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness now has a good reason to support Northern Ireland in the European Championships over the next few weeks.

The Sinn Fein politician today drew Michael O’Neill’s side in the sweepstake draw at the Office of the First and Deputy First Minster.

Northern Ireland are priced at 150/1 to win the tournament which kicks off in France on Friday night.

Writing on Twitter beside a slip of paper saying 'Northern Ireland', Mr McGuinness said: “Can you believe it!!! In the office draw just drew the favourites for the European Championship!!!"

Northern Ireland’s first game is against Poland on Sunday.

Two players from the Deputy First Minister's home city of Derry will feature in the European Championships – but for the Republic of Ireland.

Creggan man James McClean and Shane Duffy, who is from Galliagh, are both in Martin O’Neill’s squad.

The Republic’s first game is against Sweden next Monday.
