Derry City and Strabane District Council is being urged to challenge the Education Authority (EA) over its plans to reduce the number of escorts on school buses.

The EA has said it proposes to effect “necessary staffing reductions” from 31 August next.

It is understood saff are being given the option of reducing the number of hours they work or voluntary redundancy.

The EA is to meet the Unison trade union tomorrow morning when regional officer, Joe McCusker, will ask for details of where the redundancies will be made and the reasons.

The issue will also be raised at tomorrow’s monthly meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council at which Alderman Derek Hussey will call on the local authority to challenge the EA over its proposals.

At the meeting, Ald Hussey will move the motion “that Derry City and Strabane District Council urge the Education Authority and the Education Minister to reconsider their intention to reduce the number of bus escorts with effect from 31 August 2016, and invite a representative from the Education Authority to explain their intentions relative to the Derry City and Strabane District Council area.”
