Derry duo James McClean and Shane Duffy played their part in an historic night for Irish football when Ireland shocked Italy to progress to the last 16 of the European Championships in France.
A Robbie Brady goal six minutes from time secured Martin O’Neill’s side a place in the knockout stages of of the tournament for the first time in their history.
Ireland went into the game needing the win to stay in the competition and produced a magnificent team performance, albeit against a much.
The win sparked wild celebrations on par with the famous win over England in 1988 European Championships in Germany, Italia 90 and the victory over the Italians in the Giants Stadium in New York in the 1994 World Cup.
Both Derry men played the full 90 minutes in the deserved win and their performances, particularly that of Duffy which earned him the man of the match award, must now be certainties to face pre-tournament favourites and hosts, France, in the next round on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland will play Wales in the last 16 while England will face Iceland.
