A man was arrested after a car, believed to be stolen, crashed into the garden of a house in the Creggan area of Derry this evening.

The incident, involving a silver Vauxhall Astra, occurred at Ballymore Park in the Creggan area at around 7.00pm.

The man was detained by local people as he tried to flee the scene.

Darren McCready, whose garden the car crashed into, said his young child would have been killed if the incident had occurred minutes earlier.

He said: “I was sitting in the house when I heard skidding and a massive bang.

“I looked out the front window and saw this car crashed in my garden

“A boy jumped out of the driver’s seat, pulled up his hood and ran off.

“My wee girl was playing out in the garden just minutes earlier.

“She was messing about doing hand-stands around that spot, he would have probably have hit her and killed her.”

Independent Councillor Gary Donnelly, who attended the scene, condemned the incident.

He said: "This type of behaviour must be condemned. Cars being driven at speed in built up areas, whether they are stolen are not, can only lead to tragedy.

"Thankfully, on this occasion, no one was injured"

The arrested man is currently being questioned by police.
