A young Derry IRA man killed by his own bomb is to be remembered this week on the 40th anniversary of his death.

Brian Coyle (17), pictured, was injured when a hand-grenade he was about to throw at British soldiers in Meenan Square in the Bogside on 30 June, 1976.

He was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was buried in the City Cemetery with full IRA military honours.

Only hours before his funeral, members of the IRA Bogside Company, of which he was a member, shot dead a British soldier at Butcher’s Gate at the city’s walls.

This week’s commemoration will take place at the Brandywell/Bogside Monument at 7.00pm on Thursday.
