A memorial bench has been unveiled in memory of one of the victims of the Buncrana Pier tragedy at the Derry school she attended.
Jodie Lee Daniels was one of five family members who lost their lives when the car which they were travelling slipped into Lough Swilly from Buncrana Pier on March 20 last.
Her former school, St Mary’s College, has held a special day in her memory during a special ‘memorial bench’ in her honour was unveiled.
The event was attended by Jodi-Lee’s sister, Louise James, with her baby daughter, the sole survivor of the tragedy which claimed the lives of Lousie’s partner, Sean McGrotty, her sons, Mark and Evan, and her mother, Ruth Daniels..
Jodie-Lee’s classmates and staff from the school were present for the unveiling of the bench which was purchased with the help of funds raised by a former class mate.
Sarah Bonner completed a charity paddle of the River Foyle from the Prehen Boathouse to Culmore Point.
The 14-year-old, who has been a member of the Foyle Paddlers Club for the past two years, said she wanted to ‘do something positive’ in Jodie-Lee’s memory.
School principal, Marie Lindsay, also paid tribute to the support received from both local businesses and the community for the event.
“We had great support from local businesses and the community for Jodie-Lee’s Year group, it would lift your heart to people’s kindness and generosity,” she said.
