The PSNI have issued a stark warning of the danger of taking “selfies” on the top of a bridge on the main Derry to Belfast road.

It follows two people being being spotted on the top of the bridge (pictured) in Toome.
.
The pair climbed the structure to take pictures of one another while out for a cycle last Sunday morning.

The bridge’s arches are at different heights - the south arch is 19.7m above road level and the north arch is 18.7m above road level.

The bridge is 22.3m above water level.

The incident was reported to the PSNI but by the time officers arrived the duo had left.

Chief Inspector Swann said they conducted a search of the local area to ensure no one had fallen from the bridge.

CI Swann said: “Officers arrived on scene within 15 minutes of the report however no one was on the bridge at that time.
“Responding officers searched the surrounding area, including the water, to ensure no one had fallen or been hurt.
“The dangers of climbing up a bridge are obvious.

“In this instance we’ve been told the two people involved were taking photos on top of the bridge, essentially risking their lives for a selfie. I cannot warn against this type of recklessness enough.

“Quite aside from the implications for personal safety, those involved could find that they are actually committing criminal offences.

“This type of activity should not be lauded or emulated. It is foolish and dangerous and potentially criminal. Do not do it.”
