Tributes have been paid to well-known Derry solicitor, Thomas ‘Tucker’ Doherty, who died earlier today.

Mr Doherty, who was one of the most prominent legal figures in the city, passed away after a short illness.

He was a popular figure in the local courthouse for many years.

Mr Doherty, who was in his 60s, ran his own solicitor’s firm from Clarendon Street.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood today paid tribute to the local solicitor.

“It was with great shock and sadness that I heard of the untimely death of Thomas 'Tucker' Doherty.

“My thoughts and prayers, and those of my party, go out to all the Doherty family at this most difficult time.

“Thomas 'Tucker' Doherty was a great friend to the SDLP over many years. He was a constant support and source of advice to many of us.

“He was always generous. No matter the time of day or night, he was always there and always available. He will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace,” added Mr Eastwood.

Mr Doherty will be buried on Tuesday following requiem Mass at 11am in St Mary’s Church, Ballybrack, Moville.
