Derry City and Strabane District Council is to be called on to affirm its support for the people of Palestine.
In a motion to be brought before the Council this week, Sinn Fein Cllr Christopher Jackson will urge the local authority to state its support for the “boycott, divestment and sanctions” (BDS) campaign.
He will also call on the Council to investigate the “most practical” means of implementing the BDS campaign.
Cllr Jackson said: ”Anyone who cares about civil and human rights must take a clear stand to defend the right to advocate for the BDS campaign as a matter of conscience and free speech and a nonviolent means for society to support the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
“If we want to support the Palestinian people then we need to develop a divestment, boycott, sanctions campaign in Derry and Strabane and in every city, town and village across Ireland.”
Cllr Jackson concluded: “The South African experience has showed us that we have to hit apartheid regimes economically, culturally and diplomatically in order for them to take notice.”
