Police in Derry have launched an investigation into last night’s attack on visiting football supporters in the city.
A teenager was injured when Dundalk fans were attacked by a crowd of youths following their side’s 2-1 FAI Cup semi-final replay win over Derry City in the Brandywell.
They were targeted on Lecky Road (pictured), around 500 yards from the stadium, as they made their way to their minibus, which was also targeted.
It is the latest incident in which visiting football fans have been attacked.
Fears have been expressed that someone will be killed or seriously injured if they continue.
Confirming a probe to find those responsible had begun, a police spokesperson said: “We understand the strength of feeling in the community following the incident last night after the Derry City match.
“As officers who are part of this city we don’t like to see its reputation tarnished by the actions of a minority.
“We are carrying out a number of enquiries to identify those involved and would once again appeal for anyone with information to come forward.
“We would like to thank all those from the community involved in managing this difficult situation and reaffirm our commitment to working with everyone to keep this city and its visitors safe.”
