Protest outside Derry branch of Bank of Ireland over its decision to close Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign bank account

Protest outside Derry branch of Bank of Ireland over its decision to close Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign bank account ‘outrageous’ – Jackson

A protest has been staged outside a Derry branch of the Bank of Ireland over its decision to close down three accounts belonging to Palestine support groups.

The protest (pictured) was held outside the bank’s branch on Strand Road by members of the Palestine Solidarity Support Campaign group.

The group has the support of Derry Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson who described the the account closures as “outrageous,” stating an explanation was due.

Calling on the bank to reopen the account, he said: and urged the bank to reopen the account.

“The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign are an established advocacy group that have spent years protesting against the treatment of the Palestinian people.

“To close their account citing that they associate with a ‘high risk country’ is not only outrageous; but is insulting to the Palestinian people.

“The IPSC are a non-profit NGO who handed their audit reports to the bank. Funding is used for advocacy with no funds being sent directly to Palestine.”

Cllr Jackson concluded: “Bank of Ireland should reopen the account and offer a public explanation as to why this happened in the first place. Bank of Ireland cannot stay silent on this matter.”
