Police name man stabbed to death in Derry

The man stabbed to death in Derry last night was Gerard Quinn, police in the city have confirmed.

The 24-year-old, from Currynierin, died following what police described as an “altercation” in Milldale Crescent in the Waterside estate shortly before 10.30pm.

He was rushed to nearby Altnagelvin Hospital but died a shortly time later.

It is understood he sustained a stab wound.

A post mortem is due to take place tomorrow to ascertain the cause of death.

A 16-year-old youth, arrested shortly after midnight, remains in custody.

The senior police officer leading the inquiry has thanked the local community for their support for the investigation.

He added: “We have had an excellent response with a good number of people coming forward providing us with important information which is vital in assisting us with our enquiries.

“Anyone who has any information that they think could help but hasn’t yet contacted us is asked to get in touch with detectives at our Incident Room at Maydown Police Station on 028 7137 9793 or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
