Gerard Quinn murder: Police granted extra time to question teen

Derry police have been granted a further 24 hours to question a 16-year-old boy about the murder of Gerard Quinn in the city at the weekend.

The application was made at Derry Magistrates Court this morning.

The teen was arrested around 90 minutes after what police have described as an “altercation” in Milldale Crescent in Currynierin in the Waterside area of the city shortly before 10.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Quinn (pictured), a 24-year-old father of one who lived locally, was rushed to nearby Altnagelven Hospital but died a shortly time later.

Initially, police intended to ask for 48 hours but reduced it to 24 hours.

An officer told the court there were ongoing witness statements and the result of the post mortem, which is being carried out today, that they wished to put to him.

Mark Reid, defence counsel, objected to the length of time applied for and said that 12 hours would be sufficient.

He added the teenager had given a 'consistent account that hasn't altered'.

However, District Judge Barney McElholm, said that more breaks than normal may be permissible as he was a young person and that he believed that 24 hours was proportionate.
