Residents of Foreglen in Co Derry say their village is being ‘neglected' by local authorities who, they claim, haven’t cut roadside verges in the area for almost a year.
Locals say the overgrown verges are not only ‘unsightly’ but also pose a ‘hazard’ for motorists attempting to pull out onto the busy main road.
Local man Noel McFeely told the County Derry Post that two foot high rushes on the verges at both entrances to the village haven’t been cut since July last year.
“We feel our village is being completely neglected to be honest,” he said.
“You drive through other villages in the borough, for example Burnfoot, and you see their grass verges are all nicely cut. I don’t have anything against these other villages but I think there should be equality and all villages should get the same treatment.”
Mr McFeely said he was concerned about the safety of motorists exiting the village.
“At both ends of the village the entrances are badly overgrown and motorists waiting to get out onto the road cannot see a thing. It’s just ridiculous. Something needs to be done before someone is badly injured.”
Last night, a Transport NI spokeswoman said the department had plans to cut the grass verges in the area in the coming weeks.
